SwoleMate

SwoleMate is a mobile fitness app that connects to an external wearable fitness device to track performance in the gym. Our goal is to prevent weightlifting-related injuries by signaling to the user when they are using improper form through device vibration and feedback in the app. We provide users with an interactive platform to build workouts, track activity, watch tutorials, and see feedback on completed workouts.

Our Project

In order to learn the best way to design our app we conducted interviews and observations of potential users. When interviewing different possible users for our app we were able to learn that weightlifters & athletes are not familiar with wearable technology that tracks power lifting and form but they would like to wear this type of technology to try and limit their injuries in the gym and even possibly see their athletic performance take a boost. This allowed for us to try and make the wearable technology for our design easy to wear and slick so that it was not preventing someone from lifting and would allow to help the user.

We were also able to learn that poor lifting form in the gym lead to injuries in many unexperienced lifters and more experienced lifters had better form but injuries would still persist. In order to allow for better form to be performed while lifting we decided that tutorials would help people be able to learn more about how to lift properly so they wouldn't get hurt. We also allowed for the wearable technology to alert the user when there form starts to become bad enough that it will cause harm so that the user can change how they are performing their workout.

Our design is an app that connects with wearable technology around ankles, wrists and waist to track how someone is lifting and then give them information about how they did on their lift so that they are able to track their progress. Our app also allows for a user to get a generated workout if they do not know where to start as well as watch tutorials videos if they are unsure how to do the lift.

Big Points

  • Provide novice lifters with tutorials on how to execute certain lifting movements
  • Provide premade workouts as well as options to create their own workouts
  • Use wearable technology to track, grade, and correct form when executing certain lifting movements
  • Signaling users when improper form is being utilized in order to prevent injuries
