The Forbidden Word

This is The Forbidden Word, an ePortfolio about an index of banned books by the Spanish Inquisition, or "Index librorvm prohibitorvm et expvrgandorvm novissimvs". The Spanish Catholic Church in the mid-17th century, under King Phillip IV, banned a large amount of books and other sources for their heretic nature against the church. This also included books that were censored and then approved for reading by the Catholic Church.

My Project

From a utilitarian perspective, banning and censoring these writings was seen as ethical because they could disrupt the way of life at the time, and the Church would be doing the most amount of good, for the most amount of people. Limiting opinions, writings, and information to the public can create a more unified society. It's seen today within schools, with the intent to protect children from potentially harmful information.
