SustainaCycle

The rapid pace of social media-driven fashion trends, coupled with the affordability of fast fashion, accelerates textile waste, with 87% ending up in landfills. If prioritizing cost-efficiency persists, the fashion waste issue will worsen, amplifying environmental harm. To foster a circular fashion economy, we have built a system linking recycling companies with manufacturers and individuals to recycle or reuse textile materials, mitigating waste and environmental impact.

Our Project

In response to the problem of excessive textile waste and its damaging effects on the environment, our group created SustainaCycle. SustainaCycle serves to facilitate connections between clothing recyclers and manufacturers with excess textile waste, as well as individual users seeking to recycle textiles. Users are prompted to select which type of user they are when they make an account - individual, recycler, or manufacturer. After registration, the process begins.

As a manufacturer, users can catalog their available textile waste for recyclers to see. Recyclers are then able to browse available waste and request waste from manufacturers. Manufacturers can choose to accept or deny the request and unlock a chat feature to facilitate the transaction. Once completed, the recycler marks that the waste was received, and the transaction is completed. Individual users can locate their nearby recycling centers, and request a drop-off time. Once accepted by the recycler, the recycler marks the completion of the transaction. The site tracks the logistics of our recycling impact, and allows recyclers to see their relative contribution, and manufacturers to browse relevant data to find the most sought after textiles.

Individual users have some additional features on the site. They can join communities, where they can post and comment in forums with other like-minded individuals. These users can also track their personal impact under a facet of their profile, and earn badges based on site interaction and recycling stats. All users are offered learning materials about the current effects of textile production and destruction on the environment. Our goal is to educate site visitors about the environmental impact of fast fashion and offer an alternative approach to address textile waste.
