Urban Mobility

Our project Hoosier Hustle is an interactive app that allows Indiana University affiliates to monitor and compete with their friends in a sustainable way. The app aims to reduce heavy traffic and carbon emissions at IU by giving individuals an incentive to use sustainable modes of transportation such as walking, biking, and IU shuttles. The incentive includes redeemable meal points that can be used at any participating restaurant.

Our Project

The focus of our project is to reduce carbon footprints and encourage light activity through competition and rewards. Climate change has been a reoccurring discussion that's received little action. We have acknowledged the traffic issue on the IU campus during rush hour due to personal vehicles which diminishes the productivity of public buses. Our primary research shows that IU students believe the public transit system has several deterrents that discourage them to take the bus and so resorting to personal vehicles is a much more feasible commuting option for them. Our solution aims to reward individuals who walk, bike, or bus to campus which speeds up the flow of IU traffic allowing buses to arrive on time.

Big Points

  • Our project addresses IU affiliates that use modes of transportation that do not promote sustainability (i.e cars)
  • This design would be used on the Indiana University campus
  • The app would be available via mobile phone
