Misinformation & Polarization

In the so-called "information age," it can be difficult to discern which claims are reliable and which are not. BeInformed seeks to assist users in navigating and combating misinformation online through AI-supported fact checking, practice identifying misinformation, and in-app community.

Our Project

Our research uncovered two primary findings that inspired the creation of BeInformed. First, we found that education about and exposure to common misinformation tactics helps people recognize misinformation more easily in the future (Waldrop, 2023). Second, our interviews suggested to us that fact checking was the most common strategy in combating misinformation. With this knowledge, we created an app that teaches users about misinformation online, allows them to practice identifying it, and offers a fact checking service to lower barriers verifying claims. BeInformed offers an AI Chatbot to evaluate information and determine whether it is false as well as lessons on and practice identifying misinformation. Users also have the opportunity to connect with other users and invite friends to join, which increases accountability and furthers our purpose.
