Incentivizing Recycling

Our Project

After doing primary research on IU's recycling habits, we found that IU struggles to effectively recycle their waste. So we decided to target IU students, who largely impact the IU recycling habits. After conducting interviews with 12 IU students, we found that the reason they don't or struggle to recycle was that they largely felt that they didn't know where to recycle, it was too inconvenient, and they didn't feel like they were getting anything out of taking the time to sort and recycle their waste.

This research sparked our minds to create an app that would be built into IU Mobile that would be able to connect to E-bins around campus that would auto-sort their waste and reward them for what they recycled with the choice of Dining Dollars or Crimson Cash. This solves all the issues discussed, allowing to students to feel rewarded for their recycling, while also making it much more convenient as it is built into an app they already have and allows them to see where each bin is near them.
